When a crash occurs, Event Data Recorders (EDR) record information like the vehicle’s speed, accelerator and brake pedal positions, steering wheel movements, collision forces, and often much more. EDR data is one of the most useful and reliable sources of answers in a vehicle collision - but only if it’s preserved!

If your car is model year 2014 or newer, it almost certainly has an Event Data Recorder (EDR). In fact, some vehicle manufacturer’s have been equipping their cars with EDRs as early as 1994!

Some questions can’t be answered by EDR data alone. At Evident, we always recommend preserving as much evidence as possible for a full picture of the collision. When it comes to roadway evidence preservation, the sooner the better. However, roadway markings can remain for weeks or even months after a collision occurs, preserving the evidence now is better than never. Even if no identifiable markings exist on the roadway - a lack of evidence can in of itself be powerful evidence!
